Hyundai's Exports Lift August Sales Results |
|
(Seoul, Korea) With domestic vehicle sales stuck in the doldrums, strong export results provided Hyundai Motor Co. with a much needed lift in August as total domestic and overseas sales totaled 177,139 units. Although August's total was 5.1 percent less than July's, Hyundai's performance for the first eight months of the year is 17.2 percent ahead of last year's comparable period.
Exports sales reached 134,934 units as Hyundai's Indian and Chinese subsidiaries reported solid results. Export shipments from Hyundai's three Korean plants totaled 96,623 units, down 8.4 percent month-over-month while overseas plants posted sales of 38,311 units, up 3.6 month-over-month. August is traditionally a slow month as Korean factories schedule a week-long shut down for workers to enjoy the annual summer vacation.
Total domestic vehicle sales reached 42,205 units, down 4.3 percent month-over-month. Strong sales of the Porter/H100 light truck provided the only bright spot in the Korean market as the Porter emerged as the month's top-selling vehicle with 6,618 units sold, up 25.9 percent over the previous month. However, strong Porter sales were not enough to offset the 5.4 percent month-over-month decline in August commercial vehicle sales which slipped to 13,619 units.
Domestic sales of sedans were down 3 percent month-over-month to reach 17,786 units while sales of minivans and SUVs reached 28,586 units, down 8.4 percent month-over-month.
Established in 1967, Hyundai Motor Co. has grown into the Hyundai Automotive Group which includes Kia Motors Corp. and over two dozen auto-related subsidiaries and affiliates. Employing nearly 50,000 people worldwide, Hyundai Motor posted US$21.94 billion in sales in 2002. Hyundai motor vehicles are sold in 166 countries through 4,504 dealerships and showrooms.
