May 4 Hyundai's Worldwide April Sales Slip 3.2 Pct m-o-m
- Sonata regains number one sales spot at home
- Exports offset sluggish domestic sales
- Jan-Apr overseas sales of 632,673 units up 26.7 pct y-o-y

(Seoul, Korea) April brought a mixed bag of results for Hyundai Motor Co. as Sonata regained its crown as Korea's best selling car with 7,584 units sold but weak consumer sentiment kept total domestic vehicle sales in the doldrums with 44,737 units sold in April, down 2.2 percent over the previous month. The Jan-Apr cumulative sales reached 163,926 units, down 8.5 percent y-o-y reflecting the sluggish state of the domestic economy. Sedans sales dipped 6.4 percent m-o-m to 22,788 units.

April also saw Hyundai Motor Co.'s worldwide sales contract by 3.2 percent from the previous month to 213,412 units. Overseas sales remain the chief driver of the company's growth with 632,673 units sold in the Jan-Apr period, an improvement of 26.7 percent y-o-y.

Export shipments from Hyundai's three Korean factories reached 118,133 units, down 2.2 m-o-m but the Jan-Apr cumulative total was up 16.7 percent y-o-y to 443,371 units. Ovearseas manufacturing units in India, China and Turkey sold 50,542 units in April, down 6.8 percent m-o-m.

Hyundai Motor America had its third best sales month on record with 40,958 units sold. Leading the way were Elantra with 11,271 sales and Sonata, winner of the J. D. Power Award for Initial Quality in the entry-level mid size segment, with 10,790 sales. Tucson, the new SUV, also set a single-month sales record with 5,195 sales.

Hyundai Auto Canada reported April sales of 6,801 units, raising the year-to-date total to 19,172 units, a 10.2 percent year-over-year improvement that has been driven by strong sales of the Tucson, Sonata and 5-door Elantra.

Hyundai Motor India sold 19,915 units in April, an increase of 121% over the same period last year, led by Santro (14,552 units), Accent (3,791 units) and Getz (1,026 units. Exports accounted for 6,553 units in the month while 13,362 vehicles were sold in the Indian market, a whopping 136 percent growth over the previous April.
