June 1, 2006 Hyundai´s Worldwide May Sales Rise 6.3 Pct m-o-m

• May domestic sales edge up 2.2 pct to 45,000 units
• Export sales up 7.4 pct
• Jan-May worldwide sales of 1,100,009 units up 11.6 pct

(Seoul, Korea) In May, Hyundai Motor Co.´s worldwide sales rose 6.3 percent over the previous month to 228,712 units. The Jan-May cumulative total reached 1,100,009 units, up 11.6 percent y-o-y.
Driven by a surge in the demand for commercial vehicles, May domestic rose 2.2 percent to 45,000 units while overseas sales which includes shipments from Hyundai´s Korean factories and units sold by Hyundai´s manufacturing subsidiaries in the United States, China, India and Turkey rose by 7.4 percent to 183,712 units over the previous month.
Domestic Sedans, SUVs and Minivans
The company´s sedan sales in the Korean market dropped by 15.1 percent m-o-m to 22,876 units but Sonata retained its crown as the nation´s number one selling car with sales of 10,664 units. Sales of SUVs and minivans posted a 32.8 percent increase to 8,088 units following a sluggish April. Sales of sedans, SUVs and passenger minivans combined declined by 6.2 percent m-o-m to 30,964 units.
Domestic Commercial Vehicles
The picture was brighter in the domestic commercial vehicle sales where sales rose 27.3 percent to 14,036 units.
Export Sales
The appreciating Korean won continues to impact Hyundai´s export competitiveness. Export shipments from Hyundai´s three Korean factories rose by 13.6 percent m-o-m to 110,242 units. Their cumulative total for Jan-Apr was also down by 6.8 percent y-o-y to 519,217 units. Ovearseas manufacturing units in the United States, India, China and Turkey reported sales of 73,470 units in May, down 0. percent m-o-m. Their Jan-May cumulative total reached 868,995 units, up 12.0 percent y-o-y.
