By combining a low-fuel-consumption, high-performance, low-noise, low-vibration direct-injection diesel engine with up-to-date common rail system technology and turbo technology (WGT and VGT) , Hyundai Motor Company is developing a green engine for use in cars, RVs, and SUVs, that will dramatically reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Traditional diesel engines simply force fuel into a combustion chamber via fuel injection pumps. In the common rail injection system, however, fuel is pressurized in a high-pressure fuel pump before being forced into the common rail. High-pressure fuel already stored in the common rail is injected into the cylinder via an ECU-controlled injector. The engine ECU precisely controls and injects the appropriate amount of fuel at the appropriate time based on engine speed and load. This results in more efficient combustion, reduced exhaust gas, and improved engine output. In addition, ECU control of the electronic injector allows pilot injection and main injection to occur separately within a cycle, generating power separately and thereby drastically reducing combustion noise at low speed.
Operating Principles of VGT
Depending on the engine's operating conditions, optimal turbine power is attained via variable vane devices connected to the vane control device, which changes the exhaust gas flow groove area and flow angle at the entrance of the turbine.
Effect of VGT Application
Supercharging conditions suitable for ever-changing driving conditions can be created with the application of VGT: supercharging can be maximized at low speeds and supercharging losses minimized at high speeds, thus improving engine output by 10 to 15 percent. Other advantages include:
- Improved acceleration performance (10-15%) and improved acceleration and deceleration responsiveness
- Improved fuel economy via efficient supercharging (10-15%)
