FF Electronic 4WD appropriately distributes power to the front and rear wheels based on road surface and driving conditions to produce optimal driving performance.
FF Electronic 4WD was developed to enhance the driving convenience and rough road driving capabilities of front-wheel-drive passenger-car-type SUVs. Compared with traditional four-wheel drives, FF Electronic 4WD improves fuel economy through optimal power distribution between front and rear wheels.
Road surface and driving conditions are determined by various sensor signals sent into and analyzed by the ECU, which then electronically controls the combining force of the multiple disc clutch in the electronic coupling to distribute the necessary driving force among to the front and rear wheels.
1. Enhanced off-road driving performance
Rough road driving performance has been drastically improved by adding a lock mode to the 4WD mode. (The lock mode should be used only in extremely adverse driving conditions like mountain roads or sand; it should never be used on ordinary roads.)
2. Improved fuel economy
2WD is used under normal driving conditions, and 4WD is engaged only when necessary. This minimizes power loss in the driving system, thus ensuring higher fuel economy than in cars with mechanical 4WDs
3. Strengthened driving safety
When operating the braking system including ABS, TCS, and ESP, the distribution of driving force is separately controlled to help maintain optimal braking and handling performance, thus enhancing driving safety.
4. Excellent responsiveness
Compared with mechanical 4WD, the maximum driving force conveying time is shortened, making quicker responses possible under any driving conditions. (Reduced skidding)
